Matenadaran, officially known as the Mesrop Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts, is one of the world's oldest and richest repositories of medieval manuscripts, located in Yerevan. Established in 1959, the institute is housed in a grand basalt building designed by architect Mark Grigoryan, featuring a monumental statue of Mesrop Mashtots, the creator of the Armenian alphabet, at its entrance. The collection contains over 17,000 manuscripts and 300,000 archival documents, including works in Armenian, Greek, Latin, Arabic, and Persian. These texts cover a vast array of subjects, including philosophy, theology, medicine, mathematics, and astronomy, providing a window into ancient knowledge. Notable treasures include the Etchmiadzin Gospel from 989 AD and the 'Msho Charentir,' the largest Armenian manuscript. Beyond being a museum, Matenadaran is an active research hub where scholars study and preserve fragile parchments using modern restoration techniques. In 1997, the collection was inscribed on UNESCO's Memory of the World Register due to its global historical significance.
