Blida, frequently referred to as the "City of Roses," is located at the base of the Tell Atlas mountains, approximately 45 kilometers southwest of Algiers. The city was founded in 1535 by the Andalusian scholar Sidi Ahmed El Kebir, who revolutionized the local landscape by introducing sophisticated irrigation systems and establishing lush citrus groves and gardens. A catastrophic earthquake in 1825 leveled much of the city, which was subsequently rebuilt following the French occupation in 1839 using a structured military grid. This historical development explains the city's orderly street layout, featuring wide avenues and public squares that contrast with older regional designs. Blida remains a vital agricultural hub, particularly famous for its oranges, lemons, and the production of rose water and essential oils. Its proximity to Chréa National Park, home to ancient cedar forests and one of Algeria's few ski resorts, makes it a popular gateway for nature enthusiasts. Today, Blida is also a significant industrial and military center within the expanding Algiers metropolitan area.
