Historically, it was the site of the infamous "Fan Affair" in 1827, when the Dey struck the French consul, an event that France used as a casus belli for its invasion. Following 1830, the French military repurposed the site, leading to significant structural alterations. Recently, major restoration efforts have been underway to preserve the palace as a primary symbol of Algerian history and a cornerstone of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Casbah.
