Palace of the Dey
The Palace of the Dey, located at the highest point of the Casbah of Algiers, served as the residence and seat of government for the Ottoman governors until the French conquest in 1830. Also known as the Citadel of Algiers, the complex began construction in the 16th century, evolving into a blend of formidable military defenses and elegant residential quarters. It features opulent private apartments, administrative halls, a mosque, and expansive terraced gardens that overlooked the bay. Historically, it was the site of the infamous "Fan Affair" in 1827, when the Dey struck the French consul, an event that France used as a casus belli for its invasion. Following 1830, the French military repurposed the site, leading to significant structural alterations. Recently, major restoration efforts have been underway to preserve the palace as a primary symbol of Algerian history and a cornerstone of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Casbah.
