This site holds extraordinary historical significance as the setting for three pivotal naval battles against northern invaders. The first major engagement occurred in 938 AD, when Ngo Quyen defeated the Southern Han forces, ending a millennium of Chinese rule. Another legendary battle took place in 1288, where General Tran Hung Dao decimated the Mongol Yuan fleet. The tactical brilliance involved planting iron-tipped stakes into the riverbed, which impaled enemy ships as the tide receded. Archaeological excavations in the area have uncovered numerous original stakes, now preserved in local museums. Currently, the river mouth functions as a crucial maritime gateway for the Port of Hai Phong and stands as a powerful symbol of Vietnamese national sovereignty and military ingenuity.
