Ta Xua is an impressive mountain massif located on the border of Son La and Yen Bai provinces in Northwestern Vietnam. Reaching a peak elevation of approximately 2,865 meters, it is among the highest mountains in the country. The massif is most famous for the 'Dinosaur Backbone' (Song Khung Long), an extremely narrow ridge that features dramatic panoramic views. Geographically, the region features a unique microclimate that frequently produces a dense sea of clouds, earning Ta Xua the reputation as a 'paradise for cloud hunters.' The slopes are home to ancient Shan Tuyet tea trees, whose leaves are harvested by the local H'mong ethnic group and serve as a primary source of income. Vegetation ranges from subtropical forests in the lower valleys to alpine meadows near the summits. While historically remote, the growth of trekking tourism has significantly developed the infrastructure of surrounding mountain villages in recent years.

Getting there

Tà Xùa is accessible from Bắc Yên town in Sơn La province via a steep and winding mountain road. The drive requires concentration and a powerful vehicle or motorcycle, as the elevation changes over a short distance are significant.

Best season

The best time for the famous 'sea of clouds' is from October to April, when weather conditions favor the formation of thick cloud decks in the valleys. During summer months, heavy rainfall can occur, making the mountain paths dangerous.

The terrain is extremely rugged and known for narrow ridges, such as the famous 'Dinosaur Backbone,' which drops steeply on both sides. Hikers move on often unpaved, narrow paths along the mountain ridges amidst a majestic landscape.

What to bring

Hiking boots with excellent grip are essential due to the steep and often slippery ridges. Since it can be windy and significantly colder on the mountain than in the valley, warm layers and a windproof jacket should definitely be brought along.

Parking

Most visitors park their vehicles at guesthouses in Tà Xùa village, which serves as the central starting point. At the most famous viewpoints, there are often only limited roadside spaces available that can be used for motorcycles and cars.

Safety

In thick fog, orientation and sure-footedness on the narrow ridges can become dangerous, so you should pause during such moments. Absolute caution is advised near the cliffs, as there are few railings and the ground can be unstable after rain.

Time needed

Many visitors plan for at least two days to increase their chances of seeing the first-rate cloud formations and to visit various viewpoints. A hike to the 'Dinosaur Backbone' alone takes about 3 to 5 hours to complete.
