Vatican Hill Foot
The foot of the Vatican Hill marks the transition from the alluvial plains of the Tiber to the rising terrain of the Mons Vaticanus. This zone lies at an altitude of approximately 15 to 20 meters above sea level and is of great historical significance as it was the site of ancient necropolises. Geologically, the substrate consists of clay-rich sediments that were used in antiquity for brick-making, which gave the hill its name (Vaticanum). The relief in this area has been heavily modified by human intervention, particularly during the construction of the Constantinian basilica and later the current St. Peter's Basilica. Massive earthworks were required to create a level surface for these sacred structures. Today, the foot of the hill is characterized by Bernini's colonnades and the foundations of the Vatican walls. The hydrology is managed by a complex system of drainage channels to minimize the pressure from slope water. This area forms the fundamental structural base of the entire Vatican City.
