Laredo, situated on the north bank of the Rio Grande in South Texas, is a historically significant city deeply rooted in the complex history of the U.S.-Mexico borderlands. Founded in 1755 by Don Tomás Sánchez under the authority of José de Escandón, it was part of the Spanish colony of Nuevo Santander. Following the Mexican, American War and the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, the Rio Grande became the international border. Uniquely, a considerable number of families in Laredo relocated across the river to Mexico to found the new city of Nuevo Laredo, retaining their Mexican citizenship. Laredo also briefly served as the capital of the independent Republic of the Rio Grande in 1840. Today, the city is the largest inland port on the border and a crucial hub for international trade, handling a significant portion of the trade between the U.S. and Mexico through its four international bridges. Its economy is heavily driven by the import-export sector, logistics, and retail, supplemented by a growing healthcare and education sector.
