Plano, a city in North Texas, is an affluent suburb within the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Settlement of the area began in the 1840s, but the city did not grow significantly until the arrival of the Houston and Texas Central Railway in 1872. Originally a small farming community, Plano experienced explosive growth in the 1970s and 1980s as large corporations like J.C. Penney and Frito-Lay relocated their headquarters there. Today, Plano is known as a major business hub, hosting the headquarters or regional offices of many large corporations. The city is regularly lauded for its high quality of life, low crime rate, and excellent schools. Plano has an extensive park system, including the Oak Point Park and Nature Preserve, the city's largest park. Despite its size, Plano has retained a sense of community, with a historic downtown that has been renovated to include shops, restaurants, and apartments.
