Nuevo Laredo is situated in the state of Tamaulipas on the banks of the Rio Grande, directly across from Laredo, Texas, making it the busiest inland port in Latin America. The city was founded on June 15, 1848, following the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, when residents of Laredo who wished to remain Mexican crossed the river to establish a new settlement. Today, Nuevo Laredo handles approximately 40% of all international trade between Mexico and the United States, supported by five international bridges, including the massive World Trade International Bridge. The local economy is driven by logistics, transportation services, and manufacturing plants known as maquiladoras. Historically, the city played a significant role during the Mexican Revolution due to its strategic position as a rail and trade hub. Nuevo Laredo also features cultural landmarks such as the Centro Cultural, which promotes the arts in this vital binational region. It remains a key pillar of North American economic integration and cross-border cooperation.
