Skagway
Skagway was once the gateway to the Klondike Gold Rush, a place where thousands of prospectors landed with dreams of striking it rich. Today, the town is part of the Klondike Gold Rush International Historical Park, with its wooden boardwalks and restored buildings preserved in their late 19th-century glory. The most iconic experience is a journey on the White Pass & Yukon Route railroad, a narrow-gauge railway that climbs steep grades and crosses dizzying trestles into the Yukon. Hikers can challenge themselves on the legendary Chilkoot Trail, the same arduous path taken by the 'stampeders' over a century ago. The town's small-town charm is complemented by its dramatic setting at the head of the Taiya Inlet, surrounded by snow-capped mountains and waterfalls. Local breweries and frontier-style saloons offer a taste of the old North. Most visitors arrive via the Alaska Marine Highway or cruise ships. The summer months provide the best weather for exploring the trails and enjoying the outdoor historical tours that bring the gold rush legends to life.
