Tranqueras is a city in the Rivera Department, located about 50 kilometers southwest of the departmental capital of the same name. Its name, meaning 'gates,' derives from the large gates of the cattle ranches (estancias) that historically dominated the landscape. The city developed around a railway station, and its economy is still heavily influenced by agriculture today. The main pillars are cattle ranching and forestry, with large eucalyptus plantations established in the area for the pulp industry. Tranqueras is also known as the 'Capital of Sandstone' (Capital de la Arenisca) due to the geological formations in the region. The city maintains a strong gaucho tradition, reflected in local festivals and customs. An important annual event is the 'Fiesta de la Sandía y el Vino' (Watermelon and Wine Festival), which celebrates the region's agricultural products.
