The Montevideo Metropolitan Cathedral, officially the Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception and Saints Philip and James, is the main church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Montevideo. It is located on Plaza Matriz in the heart of the Ciudad Vieja (Old Town). Construction of the current building began in 1790, based on designs by architect Tomás Toribio, and it was consecrated in 1804, although the facade and towers were completed later. The cathedral is a prominent example of neoclassical architecture with baroque influences. Its imposing facade is flanked by twin bell towers. Inside, it houses the tombs of several important figures in Uruguayan history, including Fructuoso Rivera and Juan Antonio Lavalleja. The cathedral is not only a major religious center but also a National Historic Monument, reflecting the city's rich history and architectural heritage.
