Burnham-on-Sea High Lighthouse
The Burnham-on-Sea High Lighthouse is a historic maritime landmark situated in Berrow, near the coastal town of Burnham-on-Sea in Somerset, England. Constructed in 1832 to replace the original Round Tower, this impressive brick structure stands at approximately 30 meters tall. For over a century and a half, its powerful beam guided commercial shipping safely through the treacherous mudflats and shifting sands of the Bristol Channel and into the River Parrett estuary. Designed by the renowned engineer Joseph Nelson, it was used in conjunction with the iconic wooden Low Lighthouse on the beach to provide a leading line for navigators. The High Lighthouse faithfully served mariners until it was officially decommissioned and sold in the 1990s, having been rendered obsolete by modern navigational technology. Today, it remains a beloved local icon and a striking feature of the Somerset coastline. Although it is now a privately owned residence, its tall, imposing silhouette continues to attract coastal walkers, photographers, and history enthusiasts who admire its enduring architectural beauty and its legacy as a beacon of safety.
