Blacknor Fort

Perched on the rugged western cliffs of the Isle of Portland, Blacknor Fort is a striking remnant of Britain's coastal defence network. Built at the dawn of the 20th century, around 1901, the fort was originally designed to protect the vital naval base at Portland Harbour from torpedo boat attacks. Equipped with powerful 9.2-inch guns, it played a crucial role in safeguarding the English Channel during a period of escalating naval tensions, and later saw renewed use during the Second World War.

Today, while the fort itself has been decommissioned and largely transitioned into private property, its imposing concrete and brick structures still dominate the cliff edge.
