Bull Point Lighthouse
Bull Point Lighthouse is an iconic navigational aid situated on the rugged coastline near the village of Mortehoe in North Devon, England. The original lighthouse was established in 1879 by Trinity House after local sailors repeatedly petitioned for a beacon to guide vessels safely past the treacherous shores of the Bristol Channel. For nearly a century, the sturdy structure stood as a guardian, casting its vital light out to sea and saving countless lives.
In September 1972, a significant rockfall undermined the foundations of the original lighthouse, causing the engine room to collapse into the sea. Reacting swiftly, a temporary light was erected while plans for a new building were developed. The current modern lighthouse was completed and operational by 1974. Although less historic than its predecessor, it continues the essential duty of warning mariners of the dangerous headland, now fully automated.
Today, the surrounding area of Bull Point is a popular destination for hikers exploring the South West Coast Path. The journey offers breathtaking views of the dramatic cliffs, wild coastline, and the expansive sea. While the lighthouse interior is generally closed to the public, its striking white presence against the dramatic landscape makes it a rewarding landmark to visit and photograph.
