It serves as a natural barrier between the freshwater delta of the Dalyan River and the Mediterranean Sea, creating a unique ecological landscape. The beach is internationally renowned as one of the primary nesting grounds for the Loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), an endangered species that has used this site for millennia. In 1988, a major international conservation effort led by figures like June Haimoff successfully halted a hotel development project, leading to the beach's designation as a protected area. To ensure the safety of the turtles, visitor access is restricted from 8:00 PM to 8:00 AM during the nesting season. The beach also hosts DEKAMER, a prominent sea turtle rescue and rehabilitation center that conducts vital scientific research.
