Vathy, also known as Samos Town, is the capital and primary port of Samos island in the eastern Aegean. Built amphitheatrically around a deep bay, the town blends modern urban life with a rich historical legacy. The neighborhood of Ano Vathy represents the older section of the town, characterized by narrow alleys, traditional stone dwellings, and red-tiled roofs. In the lower town, grand 19th-century neoclassical buildings stand as a testament to the wealth once generated by the wine and tobacco trades. A cultural highlight is the Archaeological Museum, which houses the famous Colossus of Samos, an over five-meter-tall Kouros statue dating from the 6th century BC. Historically, Vathy was a center for the Greek Enlightenment and played a significant role during the Greek War of Independence. Today, the port serves as a crucial hub for ferries arriving from Turkey and other Aegean islands. The waterfront promenade, lined with numerous cafes and shops, serves as the economic and social heart of the island.
