Bizerte Oil Refinery (Tunisia)

Weather…

The Bizerte oil refinery, operated by STIR (Société Tunisienne des Industries de Raffinage), is the only facility of its kind in Tunisia. It is strategically located at the northernmost point of the country, with direct access to Mediterranean shipping routes. Founded in 1961 as a Tunisian-Italian joint venture, the refinery today secures the country's supply of refined petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel, and kerosene. The facility processes both domestic crude oil and imports to meet national energy demands. Its location within the Port of Bizerte allows crude oil tankers to be unloaded directly, while pipelines transport the finished products to major consumption centers in the north. STIR plays a central role in Tunisia's economic policy by helping to reduce dependence on expensive fuel imports. In recent years, significant investments have been made to increase capacity to over 3 million tons per year and to modernize production environmental standards.

📋 Practical info

🏭
What is this place?
The Bizerte Oil Refinery is the only operational petroleum refinery in Tunisia, supplying the domestic market with fuels. It is of central importance for the country's energy independence and is a major industrial plant.
🚪
Visiting
The refinery is not open to the public as a security-critical facility and is strictly guarded. From the road along the site, however, the cooling towers and flares are clearly visible.
👀
Where to view it
A good viewpoint is the elevation of nearby Djebel Maabed, from where the entire refinery can be seen. From the port of Bizerte, there is also a view of the refinery and its tanks.
🧺
Local products
The refinery produces gasoline, diesel, kerosene, fuel oil, and LPG for domestic consumption. Gas stations throughout the region sell these products, and local industry directly takes petrochemical feedstocks.
📆
Active season
The refinery operates year-round on a 24-hour basis, but maintenance shutdowns typically occur in spring. Peak demand for fuels occurs in the summer months when travel traffic increases.
Nearby
A visit to the refinery area can be combined with a trip to the nearby beaches of Bizerte and an excursion to Ichkeul National Park. The historic fortress of Bizerte also lends itself to a combination.
