Mu'a Archaeological Zone (Tonga)

Weather…

The Mu'a Archaeological Zone on the island of Tongatapu is one of the most significant historical sites in all of Polynesia. As the former capital of the Tu'i Tonga Empire, which spanned from the 12th to the 19th century, the area hosts the largest concentration of monumental funerary architecture in the Pacific. The zone includes 28 terraced royal tombs (Langi) crafted from massive coral limestone slabs. These structures bear witness to an advanced society with complex political organization and impressive maritime capabilities. Mu'a was not only the administrative center but also the spiritual focal point where vital rituals were held to consolidate the divine power of the kings. Its strategic location on the Fanga 'uta Lagoon facilitated access to marine resources and trade with distant islands. Today, the archaeological zone is a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status and remains a symbol of the former glory and cultural depth of the Tongan civilization.
