Paepae 'o Tele'a is one of the most impressive and best-preserved royal tombs (Langi) in the ancient capital of Lapaha on Tongatapu. This monumental structure was built in the 16th century for the 29th Tu'i Tonga, 'Uluakimata I, also known as Tele'a. The construction is characterized by huge, precisely cut limestone slabs arranged in multiple tiers, forming a pyramid-like structure. Technically, the exact fitting of the stones, which weigh tons and were partly transported over long distances by sea, is a remarkable achievement. The cultural significance of Paepae 'o Tele'a lies in its function as a sacred resting place for the divine rulers of Tonga, reflecting deep social hierarchy and religious ancestor worship. The tomb is part of a larger complex of over 20 Langi in Lapaha, which testify to the grandeur of the former maritime empire. Today, the site is a significant historical monument offering insights into the funeral rites and architectural sophistication of medieval Tonga.
