Monuafe Island Park and Reef Reserve (Tonga)

Weather…

The Monuafe Island Park and Reef Reserve, located northeast of Nuku'alofa, was officially designated as a protected area in 1979. Originally, Monuafe was a small, vegetated coral island, but severe storms and coastal erosion in recent decades have led to the significant loss of its landmass, which is now largely submerged at high tide. Despite the reduction of its terrestrial area, the submerged reef reserve remains of immense ecological importance to the Tongatapu lagoon ecosystem. The protected zone covers approximately 33 hectares and provides a habitat for vital coral populations and nursery grounds for various fish species. Conservation status strictly prohibits the removal of coral and shellfish, as well as commercial fishing, to facilitate the area's natural recovery. The reserve serves as a critical reference point for scientists studying the effects of climate change and sea-level rise on low-lying Pacific islands. Management of the reserve is overseen by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to ensure long-term environmental sustainability.
