Teleki Tonga Reef (Tonga)

Weather…

Teleki Tonga Reef, internationally known as South Minerva Reef, is a remote coral atoll located at the southernmost extent of the Kingdom of Tonga. This circular reef system measures approximately five kilometers in diameter and remains almost entirely submerged, with coral structures visible only during low tide. Historically, the reef gained global attention in the early 1970s due to an attempt by the 'Republic of Minerva' to establish an independent state on an artificial platform, prompting Tonga to officially annex the area in 1972. The waters surrounding Teleki Tonga are remarkably biodiverse, serving as a critical habitat for large pelagic fish, sharks, and rays in the open ocean. Its isolated position makes it a significant hazard for maritime navigation, and it is the site of numerous historical shipwrecks. Today, the reef is valued as a pristine marine ecosystem and a vital fishing ground, representing a key component of Tonga's maritime sovereignty and natural resource management.
