Hikutamole is a prominent hill on the island of Vava'u in northern Tonga, reaching a height of approximately 131 meters. It is located near the village of Feletoa and holds great historical significance for the region. In pre-colonial times, Hikutamole was the site of a significant fortified settlement, known as a "pa," which provided protection to inhabitants during times of war. During the wars of unification under King George Tupou I, the fortress on the hill played a strategic role in securing control over Vava'u. Geologically, Hikutamole is part of the raised limestone terraces characteristic of the topography of Vava'u. Today, important telecommunications facilities are located on its summit, providing the archipelago with modern signals. Despite this technical use, the mountain remains a symbol of the brave history of Tongan warriors and provides hikers a great view over the rugged island world.

Fly or take a ferry from Tongatapu to 'Eua island. Once there, hire a local 4x4 or guide to reach the trailheads along the dramatic eastern ridge near the fault scarp.

The dry season from May to October is the handy time for hiking. Avoid the wet summer months when trails become dangerously slippery and tropical storms are more frequent.

Expect steep limestone cliffs and rugged volcanic soil. The terrain features a dramatic fault scarp with dense rainforest sections that require careful footing and navigation.

High-traction hiking boots are essential for the sharp coral rock. Bring plenty of water, a reliable GPS, insect repellent for the forest, and a lightweight waterproof jacket.

Formal parking is non-existent; most visitors leave vehicles at the end of the accessible dirt roads or in Ohonua town before proceeding with a local guide or on foot.
