Ha'atafu Beach (Tonga)

Weather…

Ha'atafu Beach is a pretty coastal area located on the western tip of Tongatapu, the main island of the Kingdom of Tonga. Known for its wide stretch of white sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters, it has historically been one of the most popular beaches for both locals and tourists. The beach is protected by a coral reef located about 100 meters offshore, which creates a calm lagoon good for swimming and snorkeling. Beyond the reef, the area was renowned as one of the best surfing spots in the South Pacific. In January 2022, the beach and its surrounding infrastructure were severely impacted by the tsunami following the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcanic eruption. Despite the destruction, the natural beauty of the coastline remains a symbol of the island's resilience and geological history. The Ha'atafu Beach Reserve was established to protect the unique marine and terrestrial biodiversity of this coastal ecosystem.
