Mayadin, sometimes spelled Mayadeen, lies on the right bank of the Euphrates in the Deir ez-Zor governorate and is, after the provincial capital, one of the most important market centers of eastern Syria. The town has a long tradition as a trading place for Bedouin tribes whose flocks of sheep and goats moved between the steppe and the irrigated strip along the river. Nearby stand major archaeological sites: the Ayyubid fortress of Rahba, perched on a rocky outcrop above the town, and the ancient city of Dura Europos, one of the most famous Greco-Roman frontier garrisons of the eastern Mediterranean, renowned for its surviving wall paintings. The economy of Mayadin is based on irrigated agriculture, wheat, cotton, dates, vegetables, and on oil. During the civil war the town has been the scene of repeated heavy fighting between various actors, which has profoundly altered its infrastructure and demographic profile.
