Deir ez-Zor is the largest city in eastern Syria, set on the banks of the Euphrates in a landscape of steppe and semi-desert. It was developed under the Ottoman Empire as a regional center for the area's Bedouin tribes and as an administrative seat, although its modern fabric is mostly twentieth-century. The city's iconic landmark used to be the elegant suspension bridge of 1927, destroyed during the civil war. Economically, Deir ez-Zor was tightly linked to the eastern Syrian oil fields, whose pipelines followed the Euphrates valley. The city is also a key memorial site of the Armenian genocide: in the surrounding deserts hundreds of thousands of deported Armenians perished in 1915, and the Armenian Martyrs Memorial Church in the city commemorates them. The region today alternates between the irrigated green ribbon along the river and the harsh desert behind it.
