Waterland Plantation

Waterland Plantation, situated on the right bank of the Suriname River, is a historical estate that has successfully transitioned from a colonial sugar plantation to a modern recreational destination. Founded in the mid-18th century, Waterland was for a long period a significant producer of cane sugar and later coffee. Its geographic location directly on the river made it a vital logistical hub for transporting goods to Paramaribo. Following the abolition of slavery and the subsequent economic decline of the traditional plantation system, the land saw various uses throughout the 20th century.
