The Kofidjompo Monument is a significant memorial honoring the struggle for freedom by the Maroon people in Suriname. The name 'Kofidjompo' (Kofi jumped) refers to a legendary historical incident involving an enslaved man named Kofi who leapt across a creek to escape his pursuers. The location, now officially known as Lantiwei, was a historic site for peace negotiations between the colonial government and Maroon tribes during the 18th century. The monument symbolizes the courage and resilience of African ancestors who sought refuge in the dense interior jungles and maintained their distinct cultural heritage. It serves as a focal point for commemorations on Maroon Day (Marrondag). The statue often depicts the heroic figure of Kofi, serving as a lasting reminder of the difficult path toward liberty and the recognition of Maroon communities in Suriname.
