Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral (Suriname)

Weather…

The Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral in Paramaribo is widely regarded as the largest wooden structure in the Western Hemisphere. This Roman Catholic cathedral was constructed between 1883 and 1885 and consecrated in 1885. The entire edifice is built from local timber, primarily Suriname cedar and exceptionally hard greenheart wood, notably featuring an unplastered interior that showcases the natural grain of the wood. The architecture is Neogothic in style, featuring two prominent 44-meter-high towers on the facade. In 2014, Pope Francis elevated the cathedral to the status of a Minor Basilica, marking its spiritual significance. Following a major restoration project completed in 2010 with the help of European funding, the cathedral was returned to its iconic yellow and grey colors and remains a cornerstone of Paramaribo's UNESCO World Heritage city center.
