The Neveh Shalom Synagogue in Paramaribo is a landmark of Jewish heritage in South America. While the original congregation was established in 1716, the present structure was completed in 1843 based on designs by Jean Francois Halfhide. A distinctive feature of the synagogue is its floor covered entirely with fine white sand, a tradition that symbolizes the Israelites' journey through the desert and also traces back to the Sephardic practice of muffling footsteps during secret prayers during the Inquisition. The wooden building exhibits Neoclassical architecture characterized by simple elegance and symmetry. Located directly adjacent to the Ahmadiyya Mosque, the site is globally recognized as a symbol of religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence. The synagogue remains the central house of worship for Suriname's Jewish community and houses historic Torah scrolls dating back to the 18th century.
