The Nuba Mountains span an area of approximately 48,000 square kilometers in the South Kordofan state of central Sudan. The range consists of a cluster of isolated granite and basalt hills rising from the surrounding clay plains, with some peaks reaching elevations of 1,500 meters. This region is renowned for its extraordinary ethnic diversity, being home to over 50 different Nuba tribes, each with distinct languages and cultural traditions. Agriculturally, the area is highly significant as the mountains receive reliable rainfall and possess fertile soils for growing sorghum, millet, and cotton. Historically, the rugged and inaccessible rock formations served as natural fortifications against external raids and conflicts. The ecological landscape ranges from thorn-bush savannas at lower altitudes to montane woodlands on the higher slopes. The Nuba Mountains play a pivotal role in the sociopolitical history of modern Sudan.
