The town was founded in the early 20th century by followers of the Sokoto Caliphate from present-day Nigeria, who migrated eastward following the British conquest of their homeland. These settlers, known as the Fellata or Hausa, brought with them advanced agricultural techniques and Islamic scholarship. Geographically, Maiurno sits in a fertile floodplain convenient for cultivating cotton and various grains. Today, the town serves as a significant religious center, renowned for its Quranic schools and the preservation of West African traditions within a Sudanese framework.
