Castle of Coca (Spain)

Weather…

The Castle of Coca, located in the province of Segovia, is hailed as one of the finest masterpieces of Spanish Mudejar brick architecture. Commissioned in 1453 by Alonso de Fonseca, the Archbishop of Seville, the castle stands out because it was built almost entirely of brick rather than stone. This choice of material allowed for intricate geometric ornamentation and gives the structure its characteristic reddish hue. The fortress features a sophisticated defensive layout, including a deep dry moat and two massive concentric walls reinforced with numerous towers. Despite its formidable military appearance and heavy battlements, it was primarily designed to serve as a grand palatial residence for the Fonseca family. The blend of Western Gothic and Moorish Mudejar styles makes it aesthetically unique among European castles. Designated a National Monument in 1928, it currently houses a state-run forestry school, though many of its grand rooms remain open to the public.
