Sagunto Castle (Spain)

Weather…

The Castle of Sagunto, an extensive fortification complex stretching along a limestone ridge on the eastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula, is historically renowned for the siege in 219 BC that triggered the Second Punic War. The Carthaginian general Hannibal Barca besieged the Roman-allied city for eight months, culminating in its destruction after a fierce resistance by the local population. Over the centuries, the defensive structures were continually expanded, resulting in a nearly one-kilometer-long site where Iberian, Roman, Moorish, and medieval Christian architectural layers are superimposed. Within its vast perimeter, which is divided into seven main plazas, visitors can find the traces of the original Iberian settlement of Arse, the foundations of the Roman forum including public basilicas, and a Roman theater carved directly into the hillside. The strategic value of this elongated hill overlooking the coastal plain down to the Mediterranean Sea maintained Sagunto as a crucial military stronghold in the Valencia region for over two and a half millennia.
