Requena is the heart of the Utiel-Requena wine region in the Spanish province of Valencia. The town is renowned for its long history of winemaking, especially for the Bobal grape, a native variety that produces robust red wines. The historic centre, known as 'La Villa', is a labyrinth of narrow streets, ancient churches, and fortified walls, declared a Historic-Artistic Site. A unique feature of La Villa is its subterranean caves. These were originally excavated to store grain and wine and can be visited today, offering an insight into the city's centuries-old wine culture. The gastronomy of Requena is a great complement to its wines. The local cuisine is hearty, reflecting its rural heritage. A famous local sausage is the 'longaniza de Pascua'. Another typical dish is 'ajoarriero', a type of cod pâté. Many restaurants offer menus pairing local dishes with the region's excellent wines. Every year in late August or early September, the town celebrates its grape harvest festival, the 'Fiesta de la Vendimia', one of the oldest in Spain. Requena is located about 70 kilometres west of Valencia and is very well-connected. The Madrid-Valencia high-speed train (AVE) has a station at Requena-Utiel, and the A-3 motorway provides a direct link to Valencia and Madrid. The best time to visit is in autumn during the grape harvest, when the landscape is ablaze with warm colours and the wineries are bustling with activity. Spring is also a beautiful time to see the vineyards in bloom. A visit to Requena is a journey into the heart of Spanish wine culture.
