Aracena (Spain)

Weather…

Aracena sits at the foot of a medieval castle and is the pulsating heart of the natural park of the same name in the north of the Huelva province. The town's greatest attraction, however, lies underground: the Gruta de las Maravillas (Grotto of Marvels). Discovered in 1886 and opened in 1914 as the first show cave in Spain, this grotto extends for more than two kilometers. Visitors can admire fascinating stalactites, stalagmites, and underground lakes like the 'Lake of Diamonds' on a tour of about 1,200 meters, shaped by limestone erosion over millennia. On the surface, the 13th-century Aracena Castle dominates the cityscape. Within the walls lies the Church of Nuestra Señora del Mayor Dolor, a classic example of the region's Gothic-Mudejar architecture. The old town of Aracena is protected as a historical site, inviting visitors with its whitewashed houses and shaded squares. Another highlight is the Ham Museum (Museo del Jamón), which provides deep insight into the breeding of Iberian pigs and the curing process of the famous Jamón Ibérico de Bellota. The surroundings are characterized by dense dehesas (oak groves) where pigs graze freely. This makes Aracena a gastronomic Mecca, where mushrooms and game dishes play a major role alongside ham. Hiking enthusiasts will find an extensive network of trails connecting the various villages of the Sierra. The town is reachable from Seville in about 80 minutes by car. The climate is significantly cooler in summer than in the Andalusian hinterland, making Aracena a popular summer retreat.
