💡 Tips

  • The Medes Islands (Illes Medes) are the main attraction. Book your boat trip (especially glass-bottom boats or snorkeling tours) at least a day or two in advance during summer, as they fill up quickly.
  • Parking in the town center is difficult and expensive in high season. Look for larger, paid car parks on the outskirts and walk the 10-15 minutes to the beach.
  • For a fantastic panoramic view of the beach, marina, and islands, take the short but steep walk up to the Rocamaura viewpoint. Go late in the afternoon for the best light.
  • The main beach (Platja Gran) can get very crowded. For more space, walk north towards the Ter river mouth (Gola del Ter), where the beach is wider and less developed.
  • Strong winds, like the Tramuntana, can sometimes cause boat trips to be cancelled. Have a backup plan, like exploring the nearby medieval villages of Pals or Peratallada.

🍽 Food

🍽
Arrosseria-style Rice

L'Estartit is in a major rice-growing region. Instead of just paella, look for restaurants specializing in 'arrosseria' and try a local rice dish cooked in a clay pot ('arròs a la cassola').

🍽
Suquet de Peix

A traditional Catalan fisherman's stew. The best place to try it is in one of the restaurants near the port (Port Esportiu) that uses the fresh catch of the day.

🍽
Anchovies from L'Escala

The nearby town of L'Escala is famous for its anchovies. You'll find them served as a tapa in many bars, often with 'pa amb tomàquet' (bread with tomato).

🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots

🛍
Carrer de Santa Anna

This is the main commercial street, full of souvenir shops, beachwear boutiques, and local delicatessens. It's lively and pedestrian-friendly.

🛍
Weekly Market

On Thursday mornings, a large market takes place in the town centre. It's a great place to find local produce, cheeses, cured meats ('embotits'), and crafts.

🧘
Gola del Ter Beach

Walk north from the main town beach to where the River Ter meets the sea. This protected natural area is much quieter, wilder, and popular with birdwatchers.

🧘
Cala Calella

A small, rocky cove just south of the main port. It requires a short walk but is much more secluded than the main sandy beach, and it's great for snorkeling.

🧘
Montgrí Massif Foothills

Behind the town, there's a network of hiking trails leading up into the Montgrí Massif. The lower trails offer a peaceful escape from the beach crowds with great views.

L'Estartit is set at the foot of the Montgrí Massif and serves as a key tourism hub in the Baix Empordà region. Its defining feature is the Illes Medes archipelago, located just one kilometer offshore. These seven islands comprise one of the Mediterranean's most vital marine reserves, making it a premier destination for scuba diving and snorkeling due to its bustling underwater ecosystem. The town is home to a wide, sandy beach with shallow waters, making it particularly popular with families. The seaside promenade is lined with excellent restaurants serving fresh seafood and traditional Catalan dishes. Nature enthusiasts can explore the Montgrí, Illes Medes i Baix Ter Natural Park, which gives dramatic cliffside trails and panoramic views. The historic Montgrí Castle, perched on a nearby hill, is also landmark. The best time to visit for sunseekers is from June to September, though the diving season remains active much longer. L'Estartit is roughly 45 minutes from Girona Airport. Water sports such as kayaking, sailing, and glass-bottom boat tours to the islands provide plenty of excitement for active travelers.
