Alhama de Granada is a dramatic white-washed town famously perched on the edge of the Tajo gorge. Its name comes from the Arabic 'al-hamma' (the hot spring), highlighting its most famous feature: the thermal baths. These hot springs were enjoyed by the Romans, but the beautiful horseshoe arches inside the current spa building date back to the Moorish era. The fall of Alhama to the Christians in 1482 was a turning point in Spanish history, famously lamented in ballads as it signaled the beginning of the end for the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada. The town's historical center is a labyrinth of steep streets, medieval churches, and old granaries. For nature lovers, the gorge below has scenic hiking trails along the Marchán River. Located at an altitude of nearly 900 meters, it provides a cooler climate and a unique landscape compared to the surrounding Granada plains.

Alhama is exceptionally safe, the main risk being the dizzying gorge ('Tajos') without continuous railings. Paths to the canyon become extremely slippery after rain, sturdy footwear is essential. Streets feel deserted at night, but incidents are practically unheard of.
Alhama de Granada speaks a melodic Andalusian dialect with the final 'd' usually dropped ('cansa[d]o'). English is scarce outside the tourist office and elders often don't understand a word. A polite 'buenos días' when entering shops is essential.
