Rejaf Fort (South Sudan)

Weather…

Rejaf Fort is located on the eastern bank of the White Nile, just south of the modern capital Juba, marking a historically significant point for navigation. Due to nearby cataracts, Rejaf was for decades the southernmost navigable point for steamers from Khartoum, making it a vital trading and military outpost. The fortification played a central role during Egyptian expansion in the 19th century and was later used by the Belgians under the Lado Enclave lease agreement. Historically, Rejaf is also linked to the Mahdist Revolt, as it was the site of bloody battles between Mahdists and colonial forces. Geographically, the prominent Rejaf hill provides wide views over the Nile basin, allowing for strategic monitoring of river movements. During the colonial era, the fort served as the administrative center for the Mongalla district before Juba rose to prominence. Today, the ruins of the fort and graves from that period are silent witnesses to the turbulent transition from Ottoman-Egyptian rule to British administration.
