Taleh Fort (Somalia)

Weather…

Taleh Fort, also known as Silsilad, served as the administrative and military headquarters of the Dervish State under the leadership of Mohammed Abdullah Hassan during the early 20th century. Constructed between 1910 and 1912 in northern Somalia, the complex consisted of several massive fortifications designed as a bulwark against British, Italian, and Ethiopian colonial forces. Taleh marked a significant turning point in military history when it was bombed by the British Royal Air Force in 1920, one of the first instances of aircraft being used for counter-insurgency in Africa. The fort's architecture, featuring thick walls and strategic watchtowers, reflects the resolve of the Dervish movement. Today, the ruins of Taleh stand as a national symbol of Somali resistance and the quest for independence. The site includes the tombs of prominent leaders and remnants of palaces that, despite destruction by time and war, still convey the monumental scale of the former state.
