Eyl is a historic coastal town located in the Nugaal region of the Puntland State in northeastern Somalia. Situated where the Nugaal Valley meets the Indian Ocean, the town is characterized by its dramatic limestone cliffs and rugged maritime landscape. Eyl holds immense historical significance as a primary stronghold of the Dervish State led by Sayyid Mohammed Abdullah Hassan in the early 1900s. The massive Daadheere Fort, built of local stone, still stands as a monumental symbol of Somali resistance against British and Italian colonial forces. While the town gained international notoriety as a major piracy hub in the late 2000s, it has since transitioned back to its traditional roots as a center for artisanal fishing and coastal trade. Today, Eyl remains a site of cultural heritage, attracting interest for its unique blend of ancient seafaring traditions and its role in Somalia's anti-colonial history.
