The Eyl Dervish Fort is a significant historical fortification located in the coastal town of Eyl in the Nugaal region of northeastern Somalia. Built in the early 20th century, it served as a major stronghold for the Dervish movement led by Sayyid Mohammed Abdullah Hassan during his resistance against British and Italian colonial forces. The fort is an impressive example of Dervish military architecture, designed for both defense and strategic surveillance of the Indian Ocean coast. Its massive walls were constructed using local stone and lime mortar, engineered to withstand heavy bombardment. Situated on an elevation, the fort provided a commanding view of the surrounding area, enabling the Dervish army to control access to the port of Eyl and secure their logistics lines. The fort was part of a larger defensive network that spanned across northern Somalia. In 1920, following a decisive aerial campaign by the British Royal Air Force, the Dervish State collapsed, and the fort fell into disuse. Today, the Eyl Dervish Fort is a national symbol of Somali resistance and the struggle for independence. Its monumental ruins continue to attract historians and visitors who seek to understand the complex history of anti-colonial movements in the Horn of Africa.
