Bacharach (Germany)

Weather…

Bacharach is often described as the quintessential Rhine romantic town. Tucked away at the foot of Stahleck Castle, it features an almost perfectly preserved late-medieval townscape. Its most iconic landmark is the Wernerkapelle, a roofless Gothic chapel ruin made of red sandstone that sits on a hill overlooking the town. The historic center is filled with ornate half-timbered houses, most notably the 'Altes Haus' built in 1368, which is one of the most photographed buildings in the region. Parts of the medieval town walls and their towers are still accessible for walking. For active visitors, Bacharach serves as a great starting point for the Rhine Castle Trail. A walk up to Stahleck Castle is a must; today it serves as a youth hostel and provides one of the best terraces for viewing the Rhine valley. Wine culture is deeply rooted here, as Bacharach was a major hub for wine trading in the Middle Ages. Numerous cozy wine taverns and 'Straußwirtschaften' invite guests to taste local Rieslings grown on the extremely steep slopes nearby. The town can be reached easily by regional trains from Mainz or Koblenz, or by the excursion boats of the KD line. The best time to visit is late summer or the 'golden October' during the harvest. Beyond wine, visitors should try local specialties like Hunsrück-style spit-roast. A stroll along the Rhine promenade at sunset provides a great end to a day in this historic gem.
