Tampines is one of Singapore's largest residential areas, located in the East Region of the island. The town's name is derived from the Tampines trees (ironwood) that were once abundant in the area. Before massive urban development began in the 1980s, the region was characterized by swampland and sand quarries. Today, Tampines is a thriving regional hub featuring a mix of modern high-rise residential blocks, commercial office parks, and extensive retail spaces. The Tampines Regional Centre was the first of its kind in Singapore, established to decentralize economic activity away from the city center. Key facilities include Our Tampines Hub, Singapore's first integrated community and lifestyle complex, which combines sports facilities, a library, and retail outlets. The town is also noted for its sustainable initiatives and was the first recipient of the United Nations World Habitat Award in 1992 for its exemplary urban planning.
