Fort Canning Park (Singapore)

Weather…

Fort Canning Park is a historically significant hilltop in central Singapore that has served as the stage for many pivotal moments in the island's history. In Malay tradition, the site was known as 'Bukit Larangan' or Forbidden Hill, as it was the seat of power for the kings of Singapura in the 14th century. Following Sir Stamford Raffles' arrival in 1819, the hill became the location of the first Government House and the city's first experimental botanical garden. In the 1860s, the British constructed a massive fortification named Fort Canning to defend the harbor, of which the impressive gate remains today. During World War II, the underground bunker system known as the Battle Box served as the British command headquarters where the decision to surrender to the Japanese was made in 1942. Today, the park is an 18-hectare green space that integrates historic landmarks, outdoor concert venues, and themed landscapes such as the Sang Nila Utama Garden. It acts as a vital green lung adjacent to the financial district while preserving archaeological finds from the pre-colonial era. Fort Canning Park remains a living monument documenting Singapore's evolution from an ancient trading post to a global city.
