💡 Tips

  • Watch out for seagrass on the beach between May and September; during this time, the island's north side is often clearer.
  • Grand Anse beach has a very shallow slope, making it handy and safe for families with young children.
  • Rent a bicycle to get around; the flat terrain here makes cycling much easier than on the hilly parts of Mahé.
  • Praslin airport is located right at the edge of the village; a short walk will get you to most local guesthouses.
  • Visit the nearby Vallée de Mai early in the morning to experience the Coco de Mer palms before the crowds arrive.

Grand Anse is the largest settlement on Praslin and lies on the southwestern coast of the island. It serves as the main supply and administrative hub of Praslin and hosts the domestic airport, from which numerous short shuttle flights connect daily to Mahé, a vital lifeline for the island's economy. The wide kilometer-long sandy beach is sheltered by a shallow offshore coral reef, so the water remains calm even during stronger southeast winds. Behind the beach stretches a dense palm grove, while inland rise granite hills whose slopes still show remnants of the former coconut plantations. The village contains banks, grocery stores, a police station, and several Creole restaurants. Culturally, Grand Anse is the gateway to the famous Vallée de Mai, a UNESCO World Heritage nature reserve home to the endemic Coco de Mer palm, whose extraordinary double fruit remains unique in the world and a botanical icon of the Seychelles.
