Bandia Reserve is a 3,500-hectare private nature sanctuary located about 65 kilometers from Dakar. It is the premier destination for a short safari in Senegal, offering a high density of wildlife set against a remarkable backdrop of giant baobab trees. The reserve was established to reintroduce endangered species to the region and provides a safe environment for visitors to see Africa's 'big' animals in a natural setting. Visitors can spot white rhinoceros, giraffes, zebras, ostriches, and various antelope species like the Giant Eland and Oryx. The reserve is also a haven for birdwatchers, with over 120 species recorded. A highlight of the tour is visiting the crocodile pond and seeing the ancient baobab trees, some of which were used as burial sites for local griots (traditional storytellers). Safaris are conducted in open-top 4x4 vehicles with experienced guides who help track the animals. The park features a serene lakeside restaurant where you can dine while watching monkeys and birds nearby. Bandia is open year-round, but the dry season (November to May) is particularly good for sightings as the animals congregate around water sources. Its proximity to the popular beach resorts of Saly and Somone makes it a handy half-day excursion for families and nature enthusiasts seeking an authentic wild encounter.
