Presidential Palace of Senegal
The Presidential Palace (Palais de la République) in Dakar is the official residence of the President of Senegal and a major historical landmark. The building was constructed between 1902 and 1907, originally intended as the residence for the Governor-General of French West Africa. Featuring a brilliant white facade and neoclassical architectural style, it majestically overlooks the cliffs of Dakar Bay. Following Senegal's independence in 1960, the palace was repurposed as a symbol of national sovereignty. The estate is surrounded by extensive, manicured gardens and is guarded by the Red Guard, whose ceremonial changing of the guard remains a notable tradition. The interior houses magnificent reception halls used for hosting foreign dignitaries and conducting high-level state business. Despite its colonial origins, the palace is today valued as a sign of the continuity and stability of the Senegalese state, standing as a prominent landmark in the central Plateau district.
