Featuring a brilliant white facade and neoclassical architectural style, it majestically overlooks the cliffs of Dakar Bay. Following Senegal's independence in 1960, the palace was repurposed as a symbol of national sovereignty. The estate is surrounded by extensive, manicured gardens and is guarded by the Red Guard, whose ceremonial changing of the guard remains a notable tradition. The interior houses magnificent reception halls used for hosting foreign dignitaries and conducting high-level state business. The Presidential Palace is the official residence and is not open to the public. The exterior and park-like gardens can be viewed from outside.

The palace has no visiting hours, but the surrounding square and streets are accessible during the day. The changing of the guard occurs around 10:00 a.m. and is a popular photo opportunity.

A visit to the exterior takes about 15 to 30 minutes to see the architecture and guard change. A walk around the grounds is sufficient in 30 minutes.
