The historical village of Tufutafoe, located at the westernmost tip of Savai'i, holds a unique and sacred place in Samoan history and mythology. Famous as the location where the sun sets last in Samoa, Tufutafoe is deeply intertwined with legends concerning the passage of souls to the underworld (Pulotu). The village architecture maintains many traditional elements, including ancient stone platforms and historical meeting grounds that evidence a long history of habitation. Historically, due to its remote location, Tufutafoe served as a stronghold for ancient customs and rituals that were more quickly eroded by Western influence in central areas. Its residents are traditionally regarded as the guardians of Samoa's western gateway. During the colonial era, the village remained a symbol of independence and cultural resilience, being geographically furthest from the foreign administrative hubs in Apia. Today, visitors to Tufutafoe can encounter the profound spiritual connection Samoans have with their land and the enduring legends of their ancestors.
