💡 Tips
- Visit the coastal lava cliffs during high tide or high swell to fully appreciate the power of the waves crashing against the rocks.
- The terrain is jagged volcanic rock; sturdy footwear with good grip is absolutely essential for exploring the shoreline.
- Bring plenty of drinking water and sun protection, as there is little shade along the exposed coastline.
- If locals ask for a small customary entrance fee to access specific coastal viewpoints, have small tala notes ready and pay respectfully.
🍽 Food
Best bought from local roadside stalls on the way to the village to stay hydrated.
Look for traditional umu (earth oven) meals if a local family or guesthouse has a Sunday lunch.
Sometimes available directly from local fishermen returning to the coastal areas in the morning.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Occasional local stalls sell small hand-woven items made from pandanus leaves.
Small local shops (faleoloa) sell basic snacks and drinks, but stock is limited so bring essentials from a larger town.
Walk slightly away from the main access paths to find a quiet spot along the lava cliffs and watch the ocean.
The inland path leading back towards the main road provides peaceful views of the tropical vegetation.

Taga Tai is a remote coastal village in the Palauli district, situated on the southwestern tip of Savai'i island. The location is world-famous for the Alofaaga Blowholes, one of Samoa's most spectacular natural phenomena, where seawater is propelled through volcanic tubes up to 30 meters into the air. Historically, due to its exposed position facing the open ocean, Taga developed a robust maritime culture. The residents are experts in coastal fishing and utilize the sea's abundant resources. Geographically, the region is characterized by rugged lava coastlines and dense rainforest stretching down to the shore. In Taga Tai, the traditional Samoan way of life (Fa'a Samoa) is intensely preserved, with the community closely organized around the Matai system. Today, the local economy increasingly benefits from tourism while remaining firmly rooted in subsistence farming and fishing. Nearby, historical ruins and ancient paths suggest a long history of settlement in this part of Savai'i.
